Duke of York visits Bristol’s SETsquared business incubation centre

As a city, Bristol can lay claim to a long tradition of scientific discovery, innovation and creativity, stretching from Brunel to Concorde and the A380 to the BBC and Aardman Animations.

The Bristol and Bath Science Park, comprises a site of 54 acres with planning consent for approximately 830,000 sq ft of B1/Science Related Uses.

The first phase (61,000 sq ft building) comprises an Innovation Centre and Expansion Centre linked by a central forum. In addition to the office space, the first phase can provide laboratory space tailored to individual occupier's requirements. Larger freehold or leasehold accommodation can also be secured on a design and build basis to accommodate individual requirements.

The South West of England has five iNets, which support businesses in turning ideas into new products and services by providing access to specialist information and research, linking businesses to new markets and through sharing knowledge and expertise. These cover the following sectors: Advanced Engineering and Aerospace; Biomedial; Creative Industries; Environmental; and Microelectronics.

In 2005, the Chancellor of the Exchequer conferred the title of Science City on Bristol, one of only six cities in England to receive this accolade.

The Bristol City Region is also home to the UK's 3rd most powerful academic research cluster and the largest aerospace and silicon design industries in Europe.

Academic researchers operate at the cutting edge of fundamental scientific and engineering research in single and collaboratively themed programmes, including aerospace, computing and biological systems.

The new National Composites Centre building (6,500 sq m) will open in summer 2011 at SPark, the Bristol and Bath Science Park. The Bristol city-region is already at the forefront of composites development, both as a research hub and as a manufacturing base.

NCC activities will get under way before then at centres of excellence around the UK, including the University of Bristol’s Advanced Composites Centre for Innovation and Science (ACCIS).

Major companies including Airbus and Rolls Royce, which have a strategic presence in the area, together with a significant cluster of advanced engineering companies and suppliers make this sector one of the largest employers and contributors to the sub-region's economic performance.

The city is home to leading digital companies both large and small, which are also global players, including Aardman Animations, the BBC, BT, Hewlett Packard Labs, Nokia Siemens Network and Orange, and a multitude of creative small and medium enterprises that are at the cutting edge of digital innovation. Bristol is ranked as a leading UK city in the European Innovation Index.
