Public Sector Relocation

"Bristol is seen by our staff as an ideal location, a lively place with plenty of arts, events and sports activity, and its young profile certainly suits our graduate intake."
(Bill Sanderson, Head of Operations for the Audit Commission's SW sub-region)

Bristol’s place as a leading relocation destination was further reinforced at the government Property 2010 conference held in London on 19th July.

A workshop promoting Bristol was attended by more than 50 representatives from public sector organisations and the property industry. They heard from the Environment Agency’s Head of Corporate Assets, Liz Buckle, who told the audience why her organisation had chosen Bristol for their new headquarters. Find out more.

The session was hosted by the City Council’s Invest in Bristol team and entitled ‘Relocating to a smarter, greener location’. To coincide with the event, a new campaign was launched to promote Temple Quarter as an investment destination to the public and private sector. The public sector has a strong presence in the Bristol area:

  • In 2007 the Ministry of Defence established the Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) organisation following the merger of the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO) and the Defence Procurement Agency (DPA) - DE&S headquarters are based at Abbey Wood, north of Bristol, with over 9,500 staff.
  • The Environment Agency has chosen to locate its new national headquarters in Bristol city centre. This will be one of the greenest buildings in the UK.
  • Ofsted is relocating a further 50 posts to Bristol following the expansion of its office presence in the city to accommodate its headquarters for the south of England.
  • The Audit Commission's regional office and national ICT function are based locally, as is the Government Office for the South West.

Bristol's offer to public sector organisations was underlined by the Lyons Review of public sector relocation, which rated Bristol as a 'top location' for higher value, policy and science functions.
