In 2009 GKN Aerospace acquired the Airbus UK wing component and sub-assembly manufacturing operations in Bristol and along with it 1500 highly skilled employees and a world class manufacturing facility. GKN plans to invest over £175 million in new technology and manufacturing facilities in the Bristol area. Bristol is also now home to the National Composites Centre, a UK government initiative, which includes many of the UK industrial leaders in the use of composite applications. This includes Airbus UK, Rolls-Royce, VESTAS and GKN. The National Composites Centre will see industrial development for applications in the automotive, marine and alternative energy sectors. Recent examples of international companies opening offices in Bristol include Eurogciel, an international service engineering company, which plans to create 40 new jobs and Aeroconseil, an aviation engineering and services company, which plans to create 50 new jobs at their new office in Brabazon Business Park. The oldest and most embedded concentration of high technology industry in the UK is based around Filton Airfield to the north of the city. Filton was established as one of the most important sites for the UK aviation industry as early as 1910 and has been involved in both airframe and aeroengine design, development and production ever since.
Other high-technology applications have also grown up around this concentration of aerospace and defence technology and engineering expertise at the Filton site. The site now also hosts BAE Systems Advanced Technology Centre (one of the company's key R&D centres) and an important software systems development operation for pan-European guided missile company MBDA. This expertise has been key to attracting the MoD's Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) to nearby Abbey Wood followed by a globally significant and growing concentration of prime contract and technical liaison activities of the world's major defence companies - all seeking to win major defence contracts from the MoD.
